On June 20, 2025, faculty members and students from the Faculty of Veterinary Science participated in the Cultural Heritage Conservation Project: Tracing the Srivijaya Kingdom at Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan and the City Pillar Shrine in Mueang District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. The objective of the activity was to instill an appreciation for the value of Thai art and culture. A total of 27 participants, including faculty members, staff, and students, took part in the event.

This activity emphasized the study of the history and culture of the Srivijaya Kingdom, an ancient state that held influence over the islands and coastal regions around the Strait of Malacca, including southern Thailand. The Srivijaya Kingdom flourished between the 7th and 13th centuries (Buddhist centuries 13–18) and served as a center for trade and the spread of Buddhism. It was also known for its cultural, artistic, and ethnic diversity.

Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan, also known as Wat Phra Borommathat, is an important religious site built during the Srivijaya period. It has been continually restored over time, and today features a golden-spired stupa. The site is guarded by two deities, “Thao Jatukam” and “Thao Ramathep,” who are symbolic representations of the spirits of ancient kings believed to protect the land.

In 1987 (B.E. 2530), a new City Pillar Shrine was constructed. Police Major General Khun Phantharak Rachadej presided over the traditional rituals. The main pillar was carved in the image of Jatukam Ramathep, with four faces, representing protection and safeguarding of the city. That same year, sacred amulets known as “Jatukam 2530” were created, which later gained widespread popularity.

This activity enabled faculty and students to gain valuable insights and awareness of the importance of cultural and historical heritage. It also encouraged the integration of these values into their daily lives and promoted the continued conservation of Thai art and culture for future generations.
